Summer hours, winter hours, late evening openings, last entry and closure days. The time window you choose matters: there's a "magic hour" when the Great Council Hall empties.

From early April to end of October Doge's Palace follows extended hours: 9:00 – 19:00. It's the "classic European" schedule of major museums in high season. The physical ticket office closes an hour earlier, at 18:00, but online ticketing accepts bookings minutes before the slot. Actual last entry is 18:00, though staff begin clearing rooms from 18:30.
In this calendar window the palace operates under pressure: cruise groups, end-of-year school trips, international individual tourism. The difference between early morning and noon can be dramatic — see below.
From May 1 through September 26, every Friday and Saturday, Doge's Palace extends opening until 23:00, with last entry at 22:00. It's an initiative launched in recent years to redistribute tourist flows and has worked surprisingly well: by 21:00 the main halls are semipopulated.
Evening lighting differs from daytime: Tintoretto's great fresco cycles gain contrast, courtyard statues assume different volume. For those who've seen the palace by day, this is a new experience.
Winter hours are 9:00 – 18:00, with last entry at 17:00. Natural light works against you after 16:00 in rooms overlooking the courtyard, but visitor numbers drop drastically. From mid-November to mid-February, excluding holidays and Carnival, it's the absolute best period if you want to visit calmly.
Exceptions: Carnival season (February) and Immaculate Conception bridge (December 8) bring flows back to summer levels. Carnival especially attracts Italian weekend tourism.
Otherwise, the palace is open every day of the year. Even holidays like May 1, August 15 and April 25 are regular opening days.
Ten years of observation on actual flows by local guides provides this practical map:
| Time slot | Crowds | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 – 10:00 | 🟢 Low | Groups not yet inside. Scala dei Giganti and Anticollegium nearly empty. Best for photos. |
| 10:00 – 12:30 | 🔴 Very high | Peak of the day. Guided groups fill main halls. Great Council overcrowded. |
| 12:30 – 14:00 | 🟡 Medium | Groups exit for lunch. Halls empty. Good time for Great Council and Hall of Scrutiny. |
| 14:00 – 16:30 | 🔴 High | Second peak with individual tourists and afternoon groups. |
| 16:30 – 18:00 (summer) | 🟢 Low | Cruises recall passengers to ships. Halls become breathable again. |
| 20:00 – 22:00 (evening openings) | 🟢 Very low | Few people, completely different atmosphere. Photographers' golden hour. |
Some times of year modify normal operations:
Online tickets have a 15-minute entry slot. The practical rule: arrive 5-10 minutes before slot start at the priority entrance in St Mark's Square. Earlier is pointless (they won't let you in); later risks losing the slot.
Consider Venice travel times:
If you know you're late, it's fine to arrive within 30-45 minutes of your slot start: usually staff let you in anyway, especially if there's no queue ahead. Beyond 60 minutes late, your slot expires and you need to rebuy. If booked on Tiqets, contact support: they often handle rebooking free of charge.
